as i'm sure we're all aware this shit is a work in progress. si, dans l'esprit de mes dernières vacances, voici la progression...

what we gonna do here is take a look at a simple meditation. whether you are new to meditation or a seasoned veteran, this technique can be very powerful.

before you begin this meditation, make the decision to sit down and devote yourself to it. find a place where you will not be disturbed, i.e. a room where no one will come in, where the phone does not ring, where little or no noise can get in, etc.

it is very important that you are physically comfortable when practising. this will help stop you from becoming distracted by bodily sensations that arise from being uncomfortable (obviously). it is best if you sit upright in a comfortable chairor cross-legged on a floor/cushion. make sure you clothes is not too tight/restrictive.

take a minute to relax. close your eyes and mouth, breathing normally through your nose. take a few deep breaths.

your goal is to turn your attention inward, away from the outside world of the ever changing ego and its associated judgments, towards a place of stillness and acceptance (trust me, it is there). you need a point to focus your attention on so that you can slowly withdraw from the external, chaotic side of the real world. this focus will be your breathing. become aware of your breathing with each inhale and exhale.

once you are aware of your breathing, slowly begin to breathe into your abdomen. in other words, try to breathe using your diaphragm, not just your lungs. the lungs expand downward instead of out during the inhale. If you are not sure how to breathe with your diaphragm or it is uncomfortable, then breathe like you normally do. just relax as best you can.

keep your attention on your breathing. feel yourself inhale and exhale. try not to let your attention wander from thoughts about the past to thoughts about the future, you are, after all, in neither of these places. try to withdraw your attention from all thoughts and let your attention become more and more immersed in the feeling of your breath coming and going. hold your attention and just be with your breath.

continuously recall your awareness to the inhale and exhale of your breath. if you find yourself being distracted by thoughts, gently bring your attention back to the feeling of your breathing. with each breath, allow yourself to be in the present. it is within the present that you can discover deeper levels of your mind and being. it is only ever the present you exist in.

now that you rest with your breathing, slowly turn your attention inwards and find the stillness in your mind. as you find the silence, be with it. Become the stillness. there is no reason to have any thoughts at this time. you have plenty time all day long for thoughts, now is the time for stillness. feel the silence and rest in it. if you find yourself distracted with thoughts, place your attention on your breathing again and withdraw from your thoughts. then slowly turn back towards the silence.

don't worry if you find yourself thinking a lot. this is normal. over time, you will gain the ability to quiet yourself more and more. like anything else, it just takes practice. and time. and practice and time...

try practicing this meditation once a day in the evening for about 15 to 20 minutes. make it a special part of your daily routine. as you become accustomed to your practice, add a morning meditation for the same amount of time.

finding the stillness within will be the most challenging task you can ever face, for silence is totally foreign to the normal condition of our minds. it will take persistent practice on your part. nevertheless, it is possible.

meditation can be very profound and meaningful, for the effects of resting within silence will be felt in your daily life. it gives you the opportunity to enjoy new meaning and appreciation. Meditation, like life itself, is full of paradoxes, for within the silence of nothing exists the noise of everything.

ce qu'on va faire ici est de prendre un coup d'oeil à une simple méditation. si vous êtes nouveau à la méditation ou un vétéran chevronné, cette technique peut être puissant.

avant de commencer cette méditation, prendre la décision de s'asseoir et de consacrer votre énergie pour. trouver un endroit où vous ne serez pas dérangé, c'est à dire une chambre où personne ne viendra, où le téléphone ne sonne pas, où le bruit peu ou pas de monter, etc

il est très important que vous êtes physiquement à l'aise lors de la pratique. cela va vous aider à arrêter de se laisser distraire par les sensations corporelles qui surgissent d'être mal à l'aise (évidemment). il est préférable si vous êtes assis en position verticale dans une chaise confortable. Assurez-vous que les vêtements que vous n'est pas trop serré / restrictive.

prenez une minute pour se détendre. fermez les yeux et la bouche en respirant normalement par le nez. prenez quelques respirations profondes.

votre but est d'attirer votre attention vers l'intérieur, à l'écart du monde extérieur de l'ego en perpétuelle évolution et de ses jugements associés, vers un lieu de silence et d'acceptation (croyez-moi, il est là). vous avez besoin d'un point de concentrer votre attention sur de sorte que vous pouvez retirer lentement de l'extérieur, côté chaotique du monde réel. Cette orientation sera votre respiration. prendre conscience de votre respiration à chaque inspiration et expiration. fois que vous êtes conscient de votre respiration, commencent lentement à respirer dans votre abdomen. en d'autres termes, essayer de respirer en utilisant votre diaphragme, et pas seulement les poumons. les poumons se dilatent à la baisse au lieu d'au cours de l'inspiration. Si vous n'êtes pas sûr de savoir comment respirer avec le diaphragme ou il est mal à l'aise, puis respirer comme vous le faites normalement. détendez-vous du mieux que vous pouvez.

garder votre attention sur votre respiration. sentez-vous inspirez et expirez. essayez de ne pas laisser vagabonder votre attention sur des pensées sur le passé de réflexions sur l'avenir. essayez de retirer votre attention de toutes les pensées et laissez votre attention de plus en plus immergé dans le sentiment de votre souffle aller et venir. maintenez votre attention et être juste avec votre souffle.

permanence rappeler votre conscience à la inspirez et expirez de votre souffle. si vous vous trouvez être distrait par des pensées, ramenez doucement votre attention sur le sentiment de votre respiration. à chaque respiration, vous permettre d'être dans le présent. il est dans le présent que vous pouvez découvrir des niveaux plus profonds de votre esprit et être

maintenant que tu reposeras auprès de votre respiration, tourner lentement votre attention vers l'intérieur et de trouver le calme dans votre esprit. que vous trouverez le silence, être avec elle. Devenez le silence. il n'ya aucune raison d'avoir des pensées en ce moment. vous avez beaucoup de temps toute la journée pour les pensées, c'est le moment de quiétude. ressentent même le silence et de repos en elle. si vous vous trouvez distrait par des pensées, placez votre attention sur votre respiration à nouveau et se retirer de vos pensées. ensuite lentement demi-tour vers le silence.

ne vous inquiétez pas si vous vous surprenez à penser beaucoup. ceci est normal. au fil du temps, vous gagnerez la capacité de calme vous de plus en plus. comme toute autre chose, il faut juste pratique.

essayez de pratiquer cette méditation une fois par jour le soir pendant environ 15 à 20 minutes. faire une partie spéciale de votre routine quotidienne. que vous vous habituerez à votre pratique, ajouter une méditation du matin pour la même quantité de temps.

trouver le calme intérieur sera la tâche la plus difficile que vous pouvez jamais le visage, le silence est totalement étrangère à l'état normal de notre esprit. il faudra la pratique persistante de votre part. Néanmoins, il est possible.

la méditation peut être très profonde et significative, les effets de repos dans le silence se fera sentir dans votre vie quotidienne. il vous donne la possibilité de profiter de sens nouveau et d'appréciation. la méditation est l'un des paradoxes de la vie, car dans le silence / il n'existe rien le bruit / tout.

people in my part of the world are generally less likely to do such exciting stuff. but that might well be because we are the kind of people to get rich off the sale of weapons to middle east type despots so we 're all to aware of the place such actions can lead one. either that or the people i am surrounded by (and, of course, myself) are just exceptionally lazy or remarkably pussyfied, perhaps a bit of both. who can say? well, we could, if it weren't for all the false consciousness that's going about.

(if we could please leave aside, for the moment, the fact that the title of this post makes be sound like some kind of nonce.)

this may seem like an odd post for a nihilist, seeing as my political philosophy implies (vaguely) that i should be aiming (vaguely) to burn them, or, if not burn them in particular, at least significantly increase the odds that they be exposed to some form of harm, but i quite like kids (guess who's in the childrens' library this morning?). i think what it is, aside from their general cuteness, is their unmistakable joie de vivre. they haven't had the time, or experience, to build up the cynicism and judgementalism that make the adult population of the world (or at least 'the west') such a bunch of insufferably miserable cunts (sorry ma). am i right, or am i right?

p.s. you don't need to answer that, i already know the answer.

he knew not where he was. if he could work out that much it might give him a clue as to where he was headed. or not. the street lights bounced off the wet pavement ahead of him in a startling dazzle of vibrancy. this, the multicoloured traffic lights and the car lights that seemed to be coming straight for him, only added to his general feeling of discombobulation and confusion.

none of it was helping him get his bearings. he looked up as a large truck swooshed past him. both directions looked identical. or near enough.
“six of one, half dozen of the other” he said to himself and set off up (or so he reckoned) the road. as he walked past an empty pub, all boarded windows and warnings against trespass, he thought he saw a group of people standing by the bus stop.
“friend or foe?” he wondered out loud. he felt nervous, suddenly, realising the implications of the latter being correct. on nearing, the group turned out to not be, a figment - he relaxed, feeling silly for feeling so threatened.

he berated himself for allowing his behavior to become so laissez-faire earlier. at least the dizziness had faded. any minute now he hoped to sober up entirely. not wanting to get his hopes up, he concentrated on putting one foot in front of the other. he began to notice the smell of ozone from the freshly fallen rain.
"be grateful for small mercies" he reminded himself, noticing that at least the ozone overpowered the smell of the traffic. it also seemed to bring out the smell of the bushes.

looking up he saw he had a choice to make. straight ahead or turn left? he thought of flipping a coin but realised he had no money. left it was then. down a long unyielding road with no end in sight. left right left right. as he approached the end of the road he spied a green,
"oh verdant joy!" he exclaimed, he knew where he was!
"what you lose on the swings, you gain on the roundabouts" he said to the night, as he headed straight ahead, toward his friends' house and a form of home.

bet you thought no one'd ever find anything you could say that about, ay? but's true. actually better than smack. and it's non-addictive. and it's free. damn, why'd no one tell me sooner? (they did actually, i just wasn't listening...ho hum)

so what's the trick? 'seasy, just sit and breathe. they really shouldn't call it meditating. that generally (if you're anything like me) brings up all sort of stereotypes and prejudices. like: "ain't that some hippy bullshit?". should just be called concentrating. that's what the word originally means after all. to meditate upon something is to concentrate on it. so you just concentrate on your breath. as soon as you realise your mind has gone off on one, which it most certainly will, just go back to your breath. simple. as.

another common misconception is the idea that you "clear your mind" and stop thinking. doctors have a name for this, it's called 'brain-dead'. you can't stop thinking. you can realise that your thoughts are just that: thoughts. nothing more nothing less. sounds obvious until you try it. then you realise all that stuff that's been worrying you, upsetting you or getting you to do stuff you didn't really wanna do were just thoughts. and who is in control of them? you. you are in control. no more having your dog walk you.

a particular 'distracting' thought pattern is thinking about various social interactions (is with me anyway) 'ooh', you think, 'i'll say this, then this and just wait till they hear this!' the best thing to do when this happens is to realise that whoever you're talking to in your head isn't there. or if they are you're meditating together, not talking. that shit ain't now. it can wait.

once you've got the basics down you can apparently start on all the next level shit like peering into the void on either side of reality, being a zen warrior and filling the universe with love. but that's enough hippy bullshit for now...

it should be noted that nihilism as first and foremost a declaration of intent. just because i say: 'let's soak everything in the last of the petrol and stick a match to it' doesn't (necessarily) mean i've been siphoning off fuel from my neighbours petrol tanks in preparation for such an event.

here we can make a comparison to the creation of a piece of artwork. if the artist prepares for making some art by thinking 'when this is complete, i shall burn it.' they enter into the process of creating said artwork unconstrained by worries about whether anyone will like it, whether they'll be able to sell it, etc. you will notice these thoughts will quickly render any piece of art formulaic and/or redundant. by promising themselves they will burn the artwork (even if they don't actually burn it) they free themselves to truly enjoy creating for the sake of creation. they stop worrying about the future and start enjoying the moment.

as in art, as in life. by promising yourself that your only political/personal/ethical concern is the fact that it's all gonna burn, you free yourself from worrying about the future and what it may or may not hold. then you are free to truly start living.

today we shall be discussing how to control one's own mind. there are (a few) different techniques for doing this but the end result is (or should be) the same. having control over one's own thought processes. as several buddhist masters (what does that even mean?) have noted (and trust me there are only so many ways you can say this): if your are not at peace with yourself (i.e. you are not in control of your own mind) no amount of possesions, comfort, luxury or anything else will make you happy. equally if you are at peace with yourself you can put up with almost anything.

my favourite example of this is the wise teaching of the sado-masochist in the cupboard. imagine, for a moment, that i have locked you in a small cupboard. i take you out twice a day only to beat you quite soundly. now, most people i know would be somewhat unimpressed with this treatment. i wouldn't blame them. however if the person involved was rilly, rilly into their s&m they'd love it. the difference? perception. you cannot change your external circumstances with your mind alone (a rather idiotic mistake to make) but you can change what you think of your external circumstances.

it may help (well, it helps me) to think of the mind like a dog (ok, i know i compare everything with dogs, but that's coz i rilly, rilly like dogs, ok?) anyhoo, if you let your dog/mind jump all over the place pulling you along you have no control over it or yourself. this is a very easy way to end up upset, stressed out, angry or fucked up on loads of drugs (or any combination of the above). however, teaching your mind to walk to heel, so you are in control of where it's going, well, that means its up to you. you can be happy, sad or anything in between but you are in control.

how to gain this control? i found meditation works quite well. but then, i can't get my sodding dogs to stop dragging me about. so who am i to talk?

i have a confession to make. i don't judge. i was reminded of a conversation i had with a matey i was yet to get to know (or a MIWYTOGTOK for those who like acronyms) on parliament square.
'i don't judge' i said to him.
'yes you do, you have to, you can't not judge'. he replied.
i was quite drunk at this point and, a little taken aback by the vehemence which greeted my admission, i conceded that perhaps i did judge, if only a little.

replaying this conversation in my head(i know, replaying conversations with strangers in my head, how sad is that?) the other night, i wondered why my confession of not judging upset him so much.

and then it hit me. to judge is to care. either you care about other people enough to bother to judge whether or not they have bothered to meet whatever sartorial/hygiene standards that have been set or you care enough about yourself to bother judging whether or not the person represents a threat or an opportunity. i don't do either.

i don't judge because i don't care. let's face it, we're all just a meaningless jumble of self-aware cells inhabiting slightly under-evolved ape bodies. of which there are already far too many. caring about things implies liking them. and if you know me, you know there is sweet little about this life thing that impresses me very much(apart from rilly, rilly hard drugs and they're no good for you. in the long run).

i, if i'm being frank, and i feel a bit like a frank today, don't care enough about myself or anyone else to bother judging them, it's just not worth the effort. besides, to care is but a hop, skip and a jump to sentimentality and if there's one thing i can't stand, it's that.

postscript: i do, obviously, care about my dogs. but that's it. and how could you judge those cutesy wikkle faces? aww, just look at em! they soooo cute!
