the boring scientist chappies over at discover magazine (where the story first broke with some exciting 'live-action' style blogging) put the methane production down to microbial life. but an interesting suggestion put forward in the comments section (+ only really clever people comment on articles there) suggested that the answer may be of a bovine nature. what's more; the amounts of methane being produced mean martian dairy herds contain some 31,000 members!

cows on mars
yup, you heard it here first-ish, life on mars! and, what's more, it may well be bovine! reports read by nihilists @ pharyngula have loads of methane appearing (i know, don't ask me, they're astronomers, they can see methane) in the martian atmosphere.
